Burton and Depp on "Culture Show"

With Sweeney Todd making its UK debut on Friday, there is still plenty of advertising and promotions going around. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton discuss their latest collaboration in this video from "Culture Show." Depp recalls Iggy Pop and Anthony Newley inspired his voice for Todd and Peter Lorre helped him with the acting.

Johnny was so right about silent film stars , particularly Buster Keaton , who were able to - HAD to - convey so much emotion with their eyes....and Johnny himself has always done that so well . I can see so much of Keaton in his style . Definately a touch of elegance there . As for his inspirations for the character of Sweeney , while I could detect a haunted , disturbing anti-hero element of Peter Lorre , it was Boris Karloff that came first to my mind when I saw him . Very dark...but also , dare I say , romantic . The voice was definately a mix of Anthony Newley , Bowie and...well, I would say more Sid Vicious than Iggy Pop but only because I don't know Iggy's work quite as well . Definately had Bowie's theatrical style and that rough East End punk edge to his voice but there was still a touch of that innocent , naive romantic the vengeful Sweeney had left behind . Excellent . Burton and Depp are both in a class all their own .
