Borat and Sweeney Todd. Very nice! High five!

We reported a while back on the rumour about Sacha Baron Cohen playing a role in Sweeney Todd. Well the English comedian, whose film Borat is currently busting blocks around the world, has been officially confirmed as playing Pirelli by Variety.

Most of you have probably heard this sad news already, but another Burton collaborator, Jack Palance, has recently passed away. Palance had a long career in Hollywood, appearing in, of course, Batman and many other classic movies.

So sorry to hear about Jack Palance. What an incredible presence that man had.

As for Cohen...well...I hate to sound snobbish or prudish but I've always found Ali G. to be annoying , parody though he was , as well as Borat...and Cohen, himself....? Obnoxious...but considering the role he's apparently been cast in , I might just let him get away with it...:::grins::: Interesting choice.

May he rest in peace.

First off rest in peace Palance. And second alright!!! We go Borat!!

Thats really sad about Jack Palance ;_; RIP

And i actually find Cohen to be very funny so i hope that his role in this will be nice. Cant wait for Sweeney Todd!

High five!!!!!

I recently saw Cohen as Borat on Leno, and I swear to God, there were only a few times when I even smirked. The only movie I've seen with Cohen in it is Madagascar, where he voiced Julien, king of the ring-tailed lemurs.

So, basically, I'm courious has to how Cohen will aproach this character. But I'm not worried, he was good in Madagascar, and with Tim directing and Johnny in the lead role, I'm seeing it regardless.

Let's hope it will be
Great Success!!!

We don't hope it will be good, we know it will be good!!

About the cast of Sweeny Todd, I just saw over at IMDB that Helena B-C has been replaced by Lisa Kudrow, what's up with that?

Anonymous said...

I saw that too. I'm am not very happy about that. I can't picture Lisa Kudrow as Mrs. Lovett well, EVER. If this is true, I'm going to scream.

deppthinker said...

Whaaaaaaat ?! Phoebe from Friends ?! The " Smelly Cat " girl ?! Who's in charge of casting ? This is an outrage !

deppthinker said...

I could barely stomach "Ali G." being cast...and now THIS ? Sheesh !

Anonymous said...

What are they crazy! Why are they doing this?

Anonymous said...

I just checked on IMDB, and Helena is back to being credited as Mrs. Lovett. Thank you for the love of god. That was probably someone screwing with us. Here's what I say to them: Don't do that ever again.

deppthinker said...

Okay...I'm feeling a bit embarrassed for my ranting now....but that was just a ridiculous idea, dontcha think?

Anonymous said...

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! my day has been made.

Anonymous said...

Lisa Kudrow.. as in FRIENDS Lisa Kudrow? I've never even WATCHED Friends and she still gets on my nerves. What's wrong with whoever put that up there?? I'm glad I didn't see the switch. I would've died. But now Helena's back... so I can breathe.

Anonymous said...

Thank you! I am so glad that Helena B-C is back!

Anonymous said...

I thought Lisa Kudrow was funny on Friends. Phoebe was my favourite character on the show.

deppthinker said...

True, flea, true. Still, for something as dark as Sweeney Todd....No, no no. She wouldn't do.

deppthinker said...

Thanks for agreeing, Sally. :::smiles::: Yeah, Lisa Kudrow could very well fit nicely into a Burton film one day. She's got the right look...The right sense of humour....but not this one. The clear choice is definately Helena.

Alan Rickman announced last night on CBC's The Hour that he is part of the cast and will be doing a duet with Depp

Anonymous said...

Gasp! If thats true then he is playing the judge. If i remember correctly the judge is the only male character that has an actual duet with Sweeney Todd. I love Alan Rickman and i think he can play the part quite well.

deppthinker said...

Oh, I LOVE that man ! Deliciously wicked as the judge . An excellent choice.

Anonymous said...

This film is going to have a really good cast

Anonymous said...

Rickman would be great in Sweeney Todd. I will always know him best as Proffesor Snape in the Harry Potter films, defintely a great choice. Christopher Lee and Jim Broadbent have been confirmed too. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE!

deppthinker said...

Now why am I not surprised that Christopher Lee has been cast ? :::grins::: Sounds perfect. Definately going to snatch up tickets for this one the moment they come out.

Anonymous said...

Hmmm, i think if Christopher Lee was cast he will be the judge becasue he fits the judges look. Im trying to think of other characters that Rickman could possibly play, perhaps the Beadle?

Anonymous said...

If Jim Broadbent is in the cast he will be playing the Beadle. If these 2 actors are indeed cast then i have no idea who Rickman will be playing. I'll have to go check out the origional broadway recording again. *Perhaps he's singing the opening?*

Anonymous said...

I love Christopher Lee! He Rocks!! Who will he be playing? I also agree.(deppthinker) I wish that Tim would cast Gorege Cloney again sometime I loved him in Batman! I know that he is recently going to be playing in The Good German! It looks sweet...I am actually excited to see that movie!!(I know it's off topic but I wish that he could play in Sweeney Tod!) Oh well though, it's still going to be kick a**!

deppthinker said...

Right. He co-produced the third one, didn't he...?...or something like that. Michael Keaton was Tim Burton's choice to play the big black bat. Inspired.

Anonymous said...

No, I am saying that it would be really cool if Tim Burton could cast him in one of his movies because he is a really dark person. Just like Tim. Don't ya think it would be cool?

deppthinker said...

Clooney...? Dark...? Not a word I'd use to describe him...and he's a bit too Hollywood A-List to be in a Burton film, dontcha think? Still, he does have that dry sense of humour...

deppthinker said...

Before you say anything, I do realise that Johnny Depp is on that list...but he fights the image vigilantly. Always loved that about him...

Anonymous said...

Man... Borat and Die Hard... Just kidding! I'm so excited about this movie I could plotz! I cannot WAIT! I love musicals, I love Sacha Baron Cohen, and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE TIM BURTON! I cannot believe this is happening!! So groovy.

deppthinker said...

:::laughs::: Borat and Diehard....Now that could have been some odd casting. Incidentally, wasn't Alan Rickman in one of those films...or was it Jeremy Irons ? Hmmmm...Jeremy Irons could be good in this, too. He certainly has the presence...and he sang so well in The Lion King. Heh. Yeah, this film is just looking better and better. Can't wait !

Anonymous said...

deppthinker- Alan was Hans Gruber in the first DieHard film

found an article to confirm that Rickman will be Turpin

Ahh, a wonderful choice. I love Alan Rickman.

second article confirms rickman

deppthinker said...

Beautiful ! What a dark, brilliant , wicked personality that man has. Perfect for Sweeney Todd. Oh, this is going to be fun.

Anonymous said...

I don't know, I still think he would be good in one of tim's movies.

deppthinker said...

True, emily....Something a bit lighter , though , perhaps.

Anonymous said...

I am sad to say that (as of now anyway) Christopher Lee and Jim Broadbent will not be in the film. I am extremely dissapointed if this is true, but Anthony Michael Head has confirmed that he will be in the film. I want all of them to be in Sweeney Todd.

deppthinker said...

:::sighs::: So much speculation going round. Getting more and more impatient to see the finished product. Shame Christopher Lee won't be in it. He's done well for Mr. Burton. Oh, well . As long as they don't say Johnny Depp won't be in it. I'm really looking forward to hearing him sing. Haven't since " Cry Baby "...and back then, his voice was still in transition.

Anonymous said...

deppthinker- according to the movie's director(john waters), johnny did not sing in crybaby, he was dubbed.

deppthinker said...

Ah, I thought his voice sounded too pretty-boyish. Heh. Well, then...That having been confirmed , I'm that much more anxious to finally hear him.

Anonymous said...

deppthinker-Beleve it or not, I haven't seen that movie "Cry Babby", although I have herd of the movie and know that it had to have been an older movie because Depp was in it when he was younger. Is it a good movie? If so, I'll have to go see it.

Anonymous said...

Can you believe this? This is crazyness! "Long before there was Freddy Krueger, or even Jack the Ripper, there was the legend of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and most readers assumed it was just that — legend."

http://www.crimelibrary.com/serial_killers/weird/todd/index_1.html

Off topic, Has anyone seen the movie FROM HELL? With J. Depp? I thought it was really good!

deppthinker said...

Ah, but there were no doubt butchers and lunatics aplenty in those days , particularly in Victorian London. Obviously ol' Jack and that one notoriously nasty doctor who killed his wife but , also , I did once read of a man thereabouts whose wife had also gone missing.

The police found an excessive supply of steak sauce in his larder...

deppthinker said...

And yes, emily, I have watched my From Hell dvd far too many times. I love it.

Anonymous said...

Yea, I liked it too. It was a good movie.

Anonymous said...

I got his name wrong... Anthony Stewart Head. Why didn't I see that before?

Anonymous said...

Oh my god! I just realized that this guy is Ali G! I love Ali G!

Luke Anthony said...

So.. Cohen can't sing... he's tone-deaf. So they are going to have him rap it. That's a bit annoying, since the part is written with a pavorotti-style tenor in mind. This hurts my feelings.

deppthinker said...

:::groans::: Rap...? Well, now , that's just as tasteless as the man, himself....and here was I , ready and willing to give the man the benefit of a doubt. RAP ? Has Sondheim gone senile ? Tim Curry's got a good voice. Remember Rocky Horror Picture Show ? Put HIM in.

Anonymous said...

Tim Curry was really good in Rocky Horror Picture Show. I really loved that movie. I'm going to see the play this Friday.
