Sweeney Todd filming underway

Sweeney Todd is currently shooting at the Pinewood studios in London. Yahoo has a news article with some new bits of information ; http://news.yahoo.com/s/playbill/20070227/en_playbill/106058

The article reveals Christopher Lee's character character is "the gentleman ghost".

Also, Stephen Sondheim himself sounds pretty positive about the project: "Sometimes a story or stage production has to wait a long time until the right people come together to turn it into a motion picture. That's what has happened with Sweeney Todd and I'm excited as well as confident that it will be a first-rate and startling movie."

  1. I still have a bit of trouble with Cohen being cast...Still, Burton has yet to disappoint me...and if Sondheim can trust him to interpret his dark little masterpiece then, hey...who am I to pass judgement ? Above all, I can't wait to hear Johnny sing...Heh, heh....

Cohen is kind of a lose cannon much like Michael Keaton was around the time of Beetlejuice - i know Burton took a risk with Keaton, and now again with casting Cohen, but im hoping he brings some life to the production

    haha, life.

anyway, why is everyone worried about cohen? he is a great method actor, comedians usually are. I think he will bring just the right touch to the role. the overall medley of a cast is what I am worried about.

  4. I'm really glad that Sondheim thinks that Burton and his crew can really tell the story well. This makes waiting for the movie unbearble now!!

  7. I very much doubt it...unless he's working with Sondheim in some capacity . As far as I know, Burton plans to remain faithful to the original score.

  8. Just got word that Johnny's daughter was rushed to hospital during filming. Hope she comes out okay. That kid is his world.

  10. It's completely understandable and so like Johnny to keep the details safe from the media...but yeah , I was glad to have read that much . I've nothing but respect for the guy for putting the movie on hold...but then , the director is the child's godfather , after all. Good to know there are still a few human beings left in the entertainment industry , eh ?

  12. I heard it was coming out December of this year . Hopefully that will still happen despite the delay in production due to Johnny taking time off to be with his daughter in hospital .

    Hope she's okay....

  14. I'm not sure , as Johnny is such a private person when it comes to family matters and rightly so....but the last I heard , she had stepped on a rusty nail and contracted some form of blood poisoning...hopefully not life - threatening . I admire the guy for staying with her through it all .

  16. Intriguing . Gotta agree with that , anon...though I must say , he does look a bit preoccupied , doesn't he...? I wonder just how far into production he got the call that his daughter was in hospital ? Then again , being the consumate actor that he is , perhaps he was just trying to get into character. After all , it's not easy to portray a serial killer , musical or not .
