Sweeney Todd teaser poster and new cast members!

Sorry for the somewhat late update; Variety has released an official teaser poster of Sweeney Todd. Click on the above thumbnail to see a larger version. The poster also confirms a few casting rumours; Timothy Spall and Christopher Lee will indeed appear in the movie!
This marks the first time Burton will work with the British actor Timothy Spall (Wormtail from the Harry Potter movies) and it will be his fourth collaboration with the legendary Christopher Lee.
Timothy Spall's role has been reported to be Beadle Bramford. Christopher Lee's role is still unknown.
Thanks to karloffornia13, Fuzzy Duck and other loyal Burtonites for reporting this!

I love this poster! Thanks! I knew Christopher Lee would be in it. And I already knew about Timothy Spall being cast. The funny thing is that we now have three Harry Potter actors appearing in Sweeney Todd. Can't wait. I will defintely will be purchasing tickets for this, even if it is R-rated.

    Exciting stuff,
i just hope its not to bloody.. (I'm homophobic)

I have a feeling this will be more along the lines of a 'Sleepy hollow' which will be cool. but its a nice to get Tim back into something alittle more darker and heavy.. he hasn't done that for a couple of years.. Fantastic.

  6. Fantastic ! I knew Burton couldn't put a movie like this together and not include Lee. Brilliant poster, as well. So he's finally got everyone together....? Pins and needles here. Pins and needles. Can't wait to hear Johnny sing. :::winks:::

"HK: On SWEENEY TODD, is Danny (Elfman) going to be doing some re-orchestration for you on that?

TB: I've talked to him, but I just don't... My relationship with Danny now... I don't think I'd ask him to do that just because it wouldn't be using him to what his great talents are. He's busy at the moment, so I think... I mean, he's very supportive of me and that's great, but it wouldn't utilize his talents very well."

    that's what i was talking about ^^

  14. Stephen Sondheim wrote the original score many years ago . I think Mr. Elfman just may have a lawsuit on his hands were he to entertain thoughts of penning his own composition , no ?

i dont think Elfman would get sued for reinterpreting a stage shows score for the film medium, but i understand why it isnt necessary for him to get involved, seeing as the script comes with a score pre-packaged.

  16. Yes....and what a dark, disturbing, brilliant score it is. I wouldn't change a thing, myself.

I hope the violence will be more Sleepy Hollow than Pan's Labirynth. I felt sick at the end of PL 'cos the violence was very graphic, while SH was tongue-in-cheek, a bit like Kill Bill.

  21. Well, the original musical was a bit disturbing but, knowing Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's ironic , irreverent sense of humour, I'm sure it will be very tongue - in - cheek . Fear not.

What role do you think Chrisopher Lee will play?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Along the lines of Sleepy Hollow , it might have been fun to see him as the judge but, since Alan Rickman will apparently be taking on that role....Hmmmm....Good question....It's been so long since I've seen the original, I've forgotten most of the characters...

  25. ^ Check out the latest news update for Christopher Lee's character name... I am not sure if this character is in the musical or not since I am not familiar with it myself.

  26. Hmmm...Yeah....It's been ages since I've seen the actual musical...Gentleman Ghost....? I don't recall one....and I can't find any info on it other than what has been mentioned for Burton's take on it....:::shrugs:::....Just have to wait and see , I suppose....

I hope Christopher Lee does a big roll in this movie! I love his voice. I sounds so awesome! I hope it will be like Sleepy Hollow but then again, maby a little more dark too. In a Tim Burton style...That is. I like the poster but I would like it to be the one with the blade and Depp's eyes. That looked so awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Fantastic poster that would make . I hope they do ultimately use that one , yes , Emily . As for the feel of the film , it can't help but be dark and disturbing if it's anything like the original ...and having Tim Burton at the helm with the likes of Johnny Depp and Mr. Lee on board , it's bound to be good .

Getting more and more anxious for this one....

Sweeney Todd is more Operetta than straight musical. It is dark and yes, could be disturbing to some. To mess with the "music/score" for this Sondheim classic would be a shame. It is my favorite risk taking stage production and music that made it unusual and a delight. I'm extremely familiar with the "original" cast recording with Len Carriou and Angela Landsbury (George Hearn is a favorite "Todd" as well on DVD). I found the recent broadway version interesting for the cast performed instruments and was compact, but the show suffered some of it's intensity and darkness given that novelty, although one blue haired lady prounced as I arrived late, "Well I never!" and stormed out - due to it's darkeness. It's not the standard fare!! NY City Opera performs it every few years to bring in theatre folk and have done strong revivals. As for Lee playing a "ghost gentleman" - no such charachter in the original libretto, but the score is so vast there would be many interesting ways for a "new" charachter to be introduced and not be "odd" - with TB history and style? Depp is a favorite of mine as well, this should be very interesting. I'm guessing but Sacha Baron Cohen as the "Italian" Barber? Could be. Who is playing Tobias? That's a good role as well as the "Sailor" -beautiful song called "Johanna" - Sweeney's daughter and sang by Victor Garber as a young broadway actor in the original cast album - and the role of Johanna is simply not simple...will be interesting...fingers crossed!
