Believe It or Not postponed?

According to Slate.com, Burton's film, starring Jim Carrey as Robert Ripley, has been postponed due to script problems and the escalating budget. This is disappointing if it's true, but the same story says that Burton has been switched to directing the often-rumoured Sweeney Todd instead. So either way it seems like we'll have at least one Burton film to look forward to in the near future.

  1. Damn! I wish we all could get some type of commitment to a movie from Burton. He keeps moving from "Believe It or Not" and "Sweeny Todd", I wish that he would make up his mind and stick to it! But in the end, he will make the correct choice.

I saw on Tim's profile on IMDB, two weeks ago, Sweeney Todd under his director credits. Then three or four days later it got taken off. Definitely something to think about.

Most likely Tim will not do the musical,Danny Elfmen will.Tim and Danny is real close friends and they have worked on so meny movies together, from what I gather...Tim and Danny have been friends for a long time. And if they say postponed most likely they just mean that they will do Believe It or Not,but it will just take longer than what expected.Who really knows maby he will do both.!?

That article doesn't say that it won't be a musical (and Variety says it will be a musical).

    Danny WONT be doing it..
If its going to happen, and if its a musical they will use the score and songs originally written for it. the ones used in its recent Broadway production.. I'm sure.

Believe it or not having script issue? well considering it was done by the couple who did Ed wood I'm supirsed.... makes you wonder what Burton's after with this. Mind you budget issues to.. if his not careful it will be another superman or pota situation.. maybe it good to put it back and do Tood now.

I'd much rather see him do Believe It or Not personally. Just for the sole reason that I looooooove Robert Ripley...what better way to waste your time then look at a museum of people with three legs?
Plus, i hate musicals. And even the fact that, like some of you said, it prolly wont be a musical makes it even worse. A story originally written as a musical isn't really a story once you take the music outta it.

Bad news here mixed with some great news. The bad news is, obviously, the incredibly huge disappointment in the postponing of Believe it or Not. Hopefully this'll work out for the best, though, and will give them more time to sort things out.
The good news about that project is that it shows that Jim Carrey is seeing eye to eye with Burton's vision, as the two are fighting together over certain artistic liberties they want to make in the film.
And of course, the great news is that Burton will be directing a movie that, in my opinion, is tailor made for him. A dark musical about a barber who slices people's throats. And, obviously, any film directed by Burton and starring our favourite Burton regular, Johnny Depp. Hopefully this'll get released in the summer of 2007 and we'll have quite the movie to look forward to! :D

Personally I'd prefer to see Burton take on Sweeny Todd. I wouldn't mind whether it were a musical or not, although it would be pretty interesting if he makes a film out of the broadway, I think this story would be absolutely perfect for Tim!
Besides, I wasn't too fussed in seeing him work with Jim Carrey...

Love Musicals and love Tim Burton so I'm really excited for Sweeny Todd.

okay well, even if something's postponed, it doesn't mean it's never coming out. so chill out, everything he does is fantastically amazing no matter what.
and i personally don't love jim carrey all the time, but as Ripley he would be very quirky and cool, and tim has worked with jim in Batman, so if you think they don't work well together you should see that and it might change your mind.
and johnny is the best, so who wouldn't be excited for sweeney todd? let's all relax and enjoy the amazing geniuses.

    i wont to see both.
Believe it or not in particuler..i to remember visiting the musicale and such.
And Todd sounds interesting..musical or not.. doesn't matter either way.. (be ideal if Danny does write songs)

However i can not see the Burton/Todd connection.. yet i mean its not a story you would think 'Tim Burton material'

A Musical gore fest.. it should very well be.. cutting peoples throats, putting them into pies, singing and danceing..lol weird.

    I thought Tim hated musicals....

I hope it's not a musical though, the plot sounds like Tim... but a musical just doen't sound like his type of thing.

To burtonfan9385: You can never trust IMDb, especially when nobody's even really sure exactly what the status is, what project Tim is working on and which one he isn't. Hopefully it'll all be sorted out eventually. I wouldn't worry about it.

EXCUSE ME, Corpse Bride and Nightmare Before Christmas were musicals? How can you say Tim hates musicals with a straight face!?!??!

This is anything but lame! I want Sweeney!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anonymous6:31 PM

wow...it never even crossed my mind that TNBC and corpse bride were musicals..

    nerrr on my part...

i guess im not really a fan of live action musicals...breaking into song and coordinated dancing is such a stretch from real life that it ruins the story line for me

but im sure whichever Tim decides to do it will be fantastic *fangirl scream*

According to Wikipedia, Believe It or Not will be released in 2009.

Wikipedia isn't dumb...the random people that screw with the information are dumb. Wiki and Imbd are highly illcredible due to people able to post information freely without the facts being checked. The truth is, we sadly won't know jack untill it's been announced by a publicist or a concreat source.

Well, IMDB knows a lot. Not the boards, but the actual website... They put Sweeney Todd on the Tim Burton page, so I'm hoping...

I like the idea of Tim directing Sweeney Todd, but Depp?

  24. Anonymous9:29 PM

I just want something Tim Burton to look forward to...I think Johnny Depp would be great in Sweeny Todd as he can be strange and creepy at times like in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, i think he could bring that kind of character into this film,,, Believe it or Not will be good i think whenever it is released..one thing for sure... I CAN'T WAIT WHATEVER COMES OUT FIRST!!

I have an interesting fact for you guys... You know that computer animated film executive produced by Robert Zemeckis and Steven Spielberg, Monster House? It comes out July 21, and looks like it could've been one of Tim's movies. It has his style stamped right on it. Here's the interesting fact. In the trailer, you can hear the main theme of Beetlejuice. Take my advice and go see it. I know I will!

  29. Sweeny Todd is such a dark musical. I would LOVE to see Burton's take on it...and to FINALLY hear Johnny Depp sing...priceless. I'm looking forward to it FAR more than anything dealing with Jim Carrey. God , he's annoying , although I've got to admit that his portrayal of Andy Kaufman was pretty amazing.

Meh, whatever. Movie directors get this crap all the time. It's not like as though you can just whip up a movie, hey, presto. There's so many processes and stuff like that. Remember that the director doesn't always get all the creative freedom that he or she wants/needs or get the fundings that they need.

Sweeny Todd was amazing! And so we learn this was no rumour. ..
as for Beleive it or not, who better to cast than Jim Carrey. Hes a great actor and not a bad looking guy on the eyes tho not as smooth as Johnny Depp.
History as we all know with Burton, has a wonderfully hauntingly way of repeating itself and Burton, no doubt will want to finish what he has begun. No matter the time consumed, Burton will at some point deliver this exciting chapter of theatrical splendor to us.
Beleive it...or not. ♡♡♡♡I just Luv that Man very dearly!!
