Burton to Make Twisted "Sleeping Beauty"?

Harry Knowles of Ain't It Cool News had this to say:

"I was chatting to a fella I know tonight, and this person heard that Tim Burton is developing another classic Disney fairy tale in a quasi Live Actiony kinda way. It seems that Tim has a hankering for SLEEPING BEAUTY... but not really... You see, he's going to tell the story from Maleficent's point of view. In fact, it'll be called MALEFICENT."

However, this is all of the information that currently exists, and at this point it may only be a rumor.

There's actually a book out, written along the lines of Gregory Maguire's Wicked, about Maleficent. I can't remember the title however, my mother bought it at the Disney museum in New Orleans over Christmas. I'd be interested to know if it would be based on it.

If he does that, I'll be severely ticked off.

Wicked is about the witches of Oz.

hit submit to soon, yes Wicked is about the witches of Oz and the Disney one is called "My side of the story" if that's the same one.

darkinddreamer, I think the book you're thinking about is actually the Evil Queen from Snow White. I took a cursory glance when I saw it in the bookstore (it has a beautiful cover) and thought the writing looked awful (Twilight-level awful).

Anyway, should this rumor prove true, I think the result would be a lot of fun, and I'd love to see what Maleficent would look like Burtonised.

  8. This would be a dream come true… I’ve loved Maleficent ever since the very first time I had laid my eyes on her. However, now everyone else will love her too.
You know she wasn't always evil...

  12. Maybe she was a practicing witch and someone really pissed her off. What do you think?

I’ve told my son now for eight years that if I ever had a chance to kiss Maleficent while she was asleep, I’d be the man to bring her face back to a youthful color.

Maleficent merchandise could be a big buy… (I’d love to be on the design team)

How do you think Maleficent became the feared evil Disney character in Sleeping Beauty?

What Hollywood star do you suggest has the potential to play this soon to be iconic villain? Give me some feedback.

Fabian: Isn't it because she wasn't allowed to be one of the fairy godmothers?

And, since it's Tim Burton, I could imagine Helena Bonham Carter as Maleficent.
Other actors I could see is Judi Dench, Nicollette Sheridan, Joanna Lumley, Tilda Swinton, Miranda Richardson, Emma Thompson and Jennifer Saunders (:

  14. Actually I could imagine the fairy godmothers as Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Miriam Margolyes!

Oh, Tilda Swinton, Emma Thompson or Helena could all do something fabulous with that role! I can't even decide which would be my top pick.
