ContactMusic.com reports that Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street had a smashing opening weekend in movie theaters in the United Kingdom. The film came out as number one at the box office, defeating competition. The film earned about £4,512,42 (about $8,960,807.42 in American dollars) in the UK during its opening weekend.
I'm sorry to admit that I really didn't like it. It's been a huge disappointment. Great graphics, but the story and the characters were absolutely flat. At least as far as I'm concerned, I really didn't feel the story, didn't connect at all. I'm not a big fan of musicals in general, it might be a reason, but still I was expecting much more by Burton. Plus, I think it's high time he took a break from having Johnny Depp as main protagonist. It's getting worn out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with the point about Johnny Depp being the main protagonist. Johnny Depp is and always has been my favourite actor but I do think that now it is time for a change.
ReplyDeleteHowever I completely disagree about your reactions on the film. I thought it was Burtons best film yet and loved every second of it. I thought the soundtrack was amazing and I really got into it. I went with my Dad to see the film and even thought he hates musicals, he really liked this film.
Then again people do have different opinions and I can understand why some people may not like the film. I, however, LOVED IT! lol
In response to the other comments, I think Tim likes using Johnny Depp because in a way he transcends being "worn out". He always approaches a role completely differently. I don't think he has ever been cast inappropriately in a Tim Burton movie--and I say that with the mind set the movies without Depp were cast appropriately also. Even if you were to consider Johnny Depp's presence in his films a trend, it's hard to say it's "worn out" when together they've made such masterpieces as "Edward Scissorhands" and "Ed Wood".
ReplyDeleteAs for "Sweeney Todd", I thought it was fantastic. I bought into the world immediately and have had a difficult time coming out of it, comparing my hometown to a great black pit and concluding that it is filled with people who are filled with shit.
No one portrays the " outsider " more effectively than Johnny Depp and that has always been the central theme of Burton's films . Granted , Burton's casting choices have always been...predictable...but so few actors can interpret his unique vision , certainly no one within the tired realm of Hollywood's current " blockbusters " . Depp takes risks that so few actors of his calibur are willing to take...and he pulls them off beautifully . Could you see Tom Cruise in a Burton production ? I thought not .
ReplyDeleteAnonymous #3 I agree with you. I loved this movie (one of my favourites) and I also can't get out of the film; whenever I have a knife in my hand, I imagine slashing at someone's throat!
ReplyDeleteTom Cruise is a dickhead.
