Edward Scissorhands Ballet

Matthew Bourne is developing Edward Scissorhands into a ballet to debut this year. Here is an excerpt from an article in which he talks about it(from villagevoice.com):

"I put the idea to do [Scissorhands] onstage to [composer] Danny Elfman first," Bourne continues, "and then to Tim. I was quite open-minded toward a musical, but they wanted it like the other pieces. They were excited by the prospect of non-verbal theater. It came from them, really. We've written the scenario for this version. It's quite different from the 1990 film. Danny's written some more music and it's starting to be designed. We hope to go into rehearsal by September. We're quite far down the road."

I am very disappointed. Like, not only did they go to Danny Elfman first and only to the best director ever made second, but their making a master piece into a ballet!!!!! I'm going to bake cookies. EVIL COOKIES THAT WILL EAT WHOEVER TAKES THE PART OF EDWARD(unless Johnny Depp decides to be Edward. Ha, Johnny Depp in thights!!!!!!!!)

They went to Elfman first, Mr. Pluto, because music is very, very important in ballet and it was Elfman who composed it. The story is of course important, but it is told through the music. I'm expecting a whole load of Lavigne-a-likes and pseudo-goth kids to come along and go 'OMG BURTON'S WORK CANNOT BE MAED INTOE A BALLET COZ BALLET IS FOR RETRADS AND PREPZ!11!!111one' etc. Burton seems to have approved of this move darlings. Ballet is an art-form, like film-making, and I think it's wonderful that the work of a great director is being made into another art form. It's nice to try new things, n'est pas? I myself am a ballerina, and yes, I do like Tim Burton's work(and Danny Elfman's, I have choreographed pieces to his music for fun on a few occasions). I'm looking very much forward to this, it could prove to be interesting if it turns out well.

I hate Lavigne so i'm going to hurt my sister and destroy a few of her belonging and also Tim came up with the idea so he should have been contacted first.(I'm might spell things wrong so don't hate (because i'm beautiful))

I like ballet as an art form, and Edward Scissorhands is such a masterpiece. I don't know...I'd have to see it before i made an opinion.

If they can make Dracula into an amazing ballet extravaganza, then I've no doubt that Edward Scissorhands can be pulled off. For all of you closed minded people, ballet really is an intricate form of art, much like Burton's works. This should be quite something...

Anonymous said...

Why not ? I hope it will be as beautiful as the movie, and that the result won't look too ridiculous... The atmosphere, the ambiance must be preserved ! But for the moment i'm happy with praying. We just have to trust Tim and Danny : wait and see...

Anonymous said...

this is gonna suck! but i'll see it anyway.

Anonymous said...

Well I honestly can't wait for this. I think it will be awesome! I bet it'll be really difficult to get tickets for though, like The Lion King. It's gonna be so cool!

I don't see how you could possibly improve Edward Scissorhands. Attempting to seems futile. And also, I've said it before, but I don't think another actor could have brought the character of Edward to life quite like Johnny Depp did. He has such expressive eyes. So I really wonder how you could recapture that beauty without being able to see a character's facial expressions, if you're sitting far from the stage. And with no lines? Some of the lines were really spectacular. It wouldn't quite be Edward Scissorhands without the "hold me" or "you can't buy the necesities of life with cookies."

And of course, won't it be a bit hard to dance with metal scissorhands? :)

Anonymous said...

Wow, i can't wait to see it.There are only to options that it can be good or totally bad, and hopefully it will be good. It sould be interesting to see what they can do to Edward Scissorhands to make it a ballet. Really how the heck are they going to do that?

Anonymous said...

hmmmmm... sounds cool.

Anonymous said...

Edward Scissorhand is by far the best movie ever. Tim Burton is the greatest director ever. As long as he takes care of all the changes the ballet should be excellent but if someone else screws with it I will be very upset. Like I said as long as Burton is in charge of the changes I cant wait to see it.

Anonymous said...

matthew bourne is AMAZING and his works often remind me of that "burtony" quality.. you'll love it! i cant wait!

Anonymous said...

I think this will be sooooooooo cool, but my heart goes out to whoever tries to live up to johnny depps roll in the movie (and because i can bet scating with scissors for hands cant be much fun.)

Anonymous said...

This will be sooooooo cool but i cant help but feel sorry for the poor bugger who gets stuck with scating with sheers on his arms (ouch)!

Anonymous said...

This is gonna be sooooooo cool but my heart goes out to whoever has to dance around in tights wearing those scissors (hmmm)

Anonymous said...

As a dancer I think that who ever gets to do it is soooooo lucky and I have seen lots of Bournes work so can not wait to see this

Anonymous said...

I think it sounds interesting, though I must say I agree that it won't be the same without dialogue. Let's give it a fair chance though.

Anonymous said...

i think that it's a good idea. dance is a huge part of my life, me being a dancer and all, and as long as danny elfman is composing it and tim ok'd it i think it'll be awsome

Anonymous said...

that is retarded. i think they should at least follow the movie. but i will go see it any way.

Anonymous said...

As a fitting retort, I would like to extend my most sincere apologies to any and all who would wish to soil this brilliant idea with their juvenile complaints of "Oh, Bitch! Now my poor little misshapen brain will be challenged by a new concept! Woe! Sorrow and Woe!" Heaven forbid that this will not be a known plot-line, adorned with dancing, music, and tights. I suppose the main point I'm trying to make is this: Since "Edward Scissorhands" is perfect to begin with, what would be the purpose in sullying the archetypal concept by devising what would frankly be a remake of a movie that is still relatively new, only in a different medium? Furthermore, would it not be interesting to partake in a continuation of the story?

Artfully Yours,
K

I am so proud of the person who is making a ballet on Edward Scissorhands. All this time I have been waiting for an Edward Scissorhands2, but I got a beautiful show that will be wached and preformed at the Wang theater in Boston, Massachesetts forever. One thing that I would like to change about this is letting the ballet version be an exact copy of the movie. Other then that, TELL ME WHEN IT COMES OUT! Please?

Anonymous said...

Its going to be AWESOME! Everyone who says it stupid is just an emo kid who doesnt understand ballet- or the deeper parts of movies that really come out in ballet. I would be so proud to get to dance in such an awesome ballet. Its definetely going to be different than the movie, but its going to be good. I just dont think we should walk into the theater excepting to see the movie, because it will be different. Im definetely going to fly into mass. for a weekend to see it.

Anonymous said...

ALL YOUR FUCKING MOVIES ARE ALL AWESOME!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I live in Cali and WILL be flying out for the express purpose of seeing this ballet. The music, the art, the charm of the movie have always been borderline-ballet as it stands so this shift is an almost natural one. Let's all just hope the choreography and stage work do the film justice... and let's hope it's dark enough to please and accessible enough to run for more than a week...

Anonymous said...

I could understand if people were worried about spoiling the original idea if a straight film remake was being made, but ballet is a completely different art form!! If you open your minds enough it may even add something new that the films was unable to convey. Dance can be so expressive so I don't belive there should be any worry about the decision to not use dialogue. Of course the ballet won't be able to follow the films original plot; everything will have to be changed and adapted to suit the new medium, but that what makes it so exciting, and with such brilliantly creative people as bourne, elfman and burton we should be in for something visually and atmospherically spectacular!

i can understand people will be scared that it might not match their expectations, as Tim Burton did make a very excellent film, but because Danny Elfman made such an intricate pretty score, i think it may match well with the ballet. at first i wasn't sure if they were stil using the Elfman score (which would have been disappointing as songs such as the Ice Dance are truly beautiful) however now that i know they are using Elfman im satisfied :)
Also, they would probably have went to Danny first because the score is a vital part of a ballet.

Sorry, I got stuck with the visual of Johnny Depp in tights....*drools* Anyway, perosnally I'd love to see this....I've never seen a ballet, but in my imagination it looks fantastic. *nods*

I think that Bourne can only produced a masterpiece..if you look at his previous works (inc. SwanLake) he takes a very traditional piece into the new age and it will be interesting ideas he can bring to this one.

Eagily anticipating the reviews

Anonymous said...

If anyone can do this, then Matthew Bourne's definately your man. If you look at his previous works such as "Nutcracker!" or Swan Lakethen it's true, they do have that "Burton" quality to them. Yes, the film was very good, and yes it would be hard to remake, but remaking it isn't really the point of the exercise. The point is to open it up to new interpretations, to insert some fresh blood so to speak, and who better to continue the lyrical nature of Edward than dancers?

Anonymous said...

Matthew Bourne is a genius and he shares that special quality with Tim Burton in that he sees the world in a fascinatingly dark, macabre and subversive way. As for the content/storyline to stick to the original set up it would be devaluing the movie in a way but approaching it from a completely different angle with the COMPLETE support of all those involved in the original project can only add value and interest to the original movie. So anyone putting it down please go and see it then make an informed choice.

I am glad that as I slowly scroll down the page, the wretched, illiterate, pseudo-goths appear to be drowned out by those who appreciate that changes are not necessarily devastating, and that Burton's work, although precious, is not holy.

I will be seeing the production, with a relatively open mind, even though adaptations do tend to irritate me, because Edward Scissorhands seems to be particularly suited to ballet, as it is very visual, and the film itself is delicately choreographed.

I advised the miserable narrow minded ones to go and seek solace at their local video store, where they can sate their 'oh so adult' artistic appetite by the scream trilogy.

I saw it and it was wonderful. I loved the film and parts of the ballet didn't work as well as the film but other parts were a wonderful re-interpretation that were a complemetary addition to the film

I just saw the ballet at Sadler's Wells on Saturday. I am a girl who is not easily impressed. And it was one of the most magical, awe inspiring, heart wrenchingly beautiful evenings of my life. There was hardly a dry eye in the house and I didn't want it to end.
Bravo!!!

Oh I went to see it just yesterday and, though at first i was seriously apprehensive, i was nearly crying my eyes out by the end ...there's no other way to describe it but totally and utterly beautiful. The symbolism I never noticed before, and the music! I decided to see it again for the second time in february - it's my new obsession they MUST make a DVD or soundtrack to it - i will FORCE them to it none is made! lol - in other words i adored it.

?!!?!??!!! There was a ballet of Draclua?!?! OMG - I can't believe i missed that! Oh well. There is no way it could have been beta that THIS ballet...

I see a lot of people getting all worked up because "you can't improve on Edward Scissorhands" or "they didn't approach Tim Burton first." But honestly, there's nothing that can be done now about who was approached first. Mr. Burton is an absolute genius, and i'm sure the thought of approaching him about the idea was a bit intimidating. How many of you have had to run an idea by someone who intimidated you with his/her talent? Did you run that idea by a few others first to get feedback? Maybe that was the case here. If Elfman was on board, then his nod of approval could have helped sway Burton's mind, had he been skeptical about the idea.

And second, they're not trying to improve on something that has already been seen as a masterpiece. They're trying to tell this story by using another creative outlet, in order to touch a larger population. It's the same basic principal of basing a movie off of a book. Some people are drawn to books, some people are touched by films, and others are moved by dance. They will reach a larger audience by telling the basic story through a different form of art.

Tim Burton believes in the project. Danny Elfman believes in it, too. Sure, skeptics can sit back and criticize all they want. But think about all of those people who thought that a story about a man with scissors for hands was a crazy idea.

I personally can't WAIT to see this ballet. Sure, it won't be exactly like the original story, but this way i can see it in a whole different light...and learn to appreciate the story of Edward Scissorhands in new ways.

I've got tickets to see this ballet, anad personally i'm really looking forward to it. The original movie is great, so great in fact it can't be tainted if this ballet isnt up to scratch. I hav total confidence in Tim Burton and Danny Elfman ( especially Elfman since music will be the integral feature in this ballet) to bring a beatiful story to a new medium. If you think about it, the story is perfect for ballet! Edward barely speaks in the movie, thats one of the captivating things, so body language can go a long way to showing how he feels. Shame on all those who condemn something before they see it, tut tut tut :)

Well, Both Tim Burton and Matthew Bourne are extremely good, I went to see one of Matthew Bournes ballets last year, and it was really really good, different, but great. I'm not sure how they are going to do it, but i'm sure it will be really good

I went to see Edward Scissorhands in the ballet, and I must say that it was good but was not the best. Perhaps dialogue would of made it better but in no way did they ruin it.

i saw the production last week. How amazing...and heartfelt. I loved it. i would recommend it to anyone! Go on book up! x

Anonymous said...

I went to see it on the 25th November and i was sat in the front row in the middle and I was hooked from beginning to end.

I love the film but you have to approach this work as a new piece, as you have to with all adaptations or remakes with an open mind.

I also dont go and see ballets but trust me, if you feel like that dont let that put you off. It is dance theatre, not straight ballet and you stop noticing it's dancing and begin to hear what they are saying.

The surprise at the end was amazing and kept my friend and I applauding as long as we could. We left the theatre with huge grins.

Basically, I LOVED IT!

I saw Edward scissorhands 2 days before christmas and I must say it was a truly touching production. As a (studying) dancer myself I drew so much inspiration from it and the funny thing was the guy playing edward I had trained with when I was alot younger! A truly magical evening!

The show was amazing!!! I wasn't sure what it would be like when I heard it was going to be a ballet, but it was great! I absolutely loved it and would recommend it to anyone!

The ballet was amazing, the film is like aballet inself, very musical and flowing and sureal. Its not like a ballet just non-verbal theatre. Ofcourse they went to Elfman first! They had to use his music! The director has nothing to do with that and music was VERY important.
The prologue was amazingly well done. I was crying by the end equally as much as if I was watching the film.
I am a HUGE Burton fan but this just highlighted everything goo about his work and made just of the skill Burton left them with in terms of ideas and story.

I saw this last night in Cardiff - what an excellent piece.... the whole thing stinks of Tim Burton - and not in a bad way. My hat comes off to the lighting director, who must've worked their a$$ off to get the feel right.

First of all, I saw the production a number of months ago and for all the skeptics out there

It was beautiful.

It was not fuzzy and covered in tutu's and other sweetness.

It was beautifully performed and well established and I believe it stayed true to the storyline, characters and to Burtons origonal concept.

Open your minds, you might find somthing interesting out there.

Okay you guys have to keep a open mind! Ballet is a beautiful dance, those dancers will have to work so hard and for you to crutis it before you even see it is Insane! I think it'll be an amazingly beautiful dance.
